One-on-One Consulting

The Writing Center offers one-on-one consulting services for writers at all stages of the writing process. Any MSU student or small group of students can make an appointment to bring any writing they may be composing (from essays, resumes, or dissertations to webpages, digital movies, or slideshow presentations) to discuss with a writing consultant in the center. Writing consultations generally last 50 minutes and can be scheduled online here. During consulting sessions, consultants serve as first readers of writers' compositions. They help writers compose clear, coherent, concise prose by drawing the writers' attention to parts of their papers that communicate their ideas successfully as well as to parts of their papers that are less effective. Consultants help writers to strengthen their writing by identifying places that are confusing and places where more information or discussion is needed. Among other things consultants help writers to think about the needs of the audiences for whom they are writing, the purposes for which they are writing, the requirements of their writing assignments, and how effectively they are communicating their understandings and expressing their ideas.
