Hours and Locations
Because all language--including written language--is best learned in
the contexts of use, the Writing Center works with students and faculty from departments, colleges, and programs across the curriculum in satellite
writing centers. These centers exist in the midst of the various contexts
in which students are learning the demands for reading and writing in
various fields and disciplines.
The Main Writing Center at 300 Bessey Hall
The Main Writing Center, open during the Fall, Spring, and Summer Semesters, offers its services to all members of the MSU community. Appointments* can be made by calling 517-432-3610, or by stopping in at the Writing Center during business hours and speaking to the receptionist. The Main Writing Center also accepts walk-ins when space is available.
Walk-in Consulting at the MSU Library
This Writing Center satellite, conveniently located between the Reference Desk
and the Cyber Cafe in the library, was established in 2000. Consulting
sessions are available on a walk-in, first-come, first-served basis. APPOINTMENTS
ARE NOT NECESSARY.
The Writing Center in the library is open during the Fall and Spring Semesters, Sunday through Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
The Student Athlete Support Services Writing Center
The Student Athlete Support Services Writing Center (SASS-WC) was established
in the Clara Bell Smith Student-Athlete Academic Center in 1997. In the
SASS-WC, student-athletes schedule appointments during study table hours
to brainstorm topics, organize ideas, and polish rough drafts of their
writing in one-on-one sessions with Undergraduate Writing Consultants
(UWCs).
The James Madison College Writing Center
The James Madison Writing Consultancy (JMWC), established
in 1993, is the oldest unit-level writing center satellite on the campus.
Housed in Case Hall, the JMWC serves the particular needs of writers in
James Madison College. Experienced peer consultants, upper-division Madison
students familiar with the college's curriculum, consult with peers at
all stages of the composing process (brainstorming, drafting, revising,
editing) and all levels of proficiency. James Madison Writing Consultants
also host a variety of workshops and classroom presentations, such as
"Reading a Complicated Text," "Writing in the Field," and "Peer Response
to Writing," to help Madison students gain a better understanding of reading
and writing in the social sciences. The JMWC is administered independently of the MSU Writing Center.
*Because missed appointments make it more difficult for other writers to use Writing Center services, we ask that all clients call to cancel any Writing Center appointments that they will be unable to keep at least one hour before the appointment is scheduled to begin. Any client who misses more than three scheduled appointments during any one semester will lose the right to make appointments in advance for the rest of that semester. (He or she will still be able to take advantage of Writing Center services on a “walk-in” basis.)
