Because the publication process has become less restrictive, writers have a lot of opportunities to push their writing to new levels. However deadlines are sometimes regarded with less seriousness as the emergence of writing technologies have come to also facilitate procrastination.
As a writer, I struggle to find the time I'd like to make full use of everything a thoughtful writing process has to offer. This is also a frequent frustration for many of my clients.
Often, when clients had given themselves a single day to write a paper for finals, they had found a genuine interest in the topics. This usually provided them with a useful semblance of motivation. Other times, you have to help them find it.
Either way, it's important to show clients how they can achieve more and do better when they use a writing process that they like.

I'm talking about both. With homework, students usually have more tangible parameters than someone who is completely self-guided. Even skilled writers can struggle to find what's good. I think that anyone who looks at an unrevised first-draft and doesn't see anything that they would change is either dishonest or making a poor self-assessment. It can be very agonizing to identify what you don't like in something that you've made. Sometimes it's easy to forget that good writing is real work.
Digital publishing offers tools that can help writers approach writing in ways that they couldn't a decade ago.While a lot of writing processes among different writers might share common elements, they can also have stark and unpredictable differences. Helping clients find things that work is one of the best things that can come out of a Writing Center consultation.
Sometimes we can't see what
Sometimes we can't see what we would/should revise because we're too close to it; we need some time. Which is another hazard of procrastination. It doesn't give us time to put the writing away, give it some space, and then come back to it in order to re-see it so we can re-vise it.
