Communicating Effectively with Digital Video workshop

The Communicating Effectively with Digital Video workshop focuses on design considerations in video such as using still and moving images, audio (voiceovers, music and sound effects), titles,  and transitions, as well as the composition stages of storyboarding, production, and file management.

The Writing Center uses Apple Macbooks with iMovie '08 for demonstrating these techniques.  We also have several laptops with older versions of iMovie.

Welcome to the Writing Center

  • We'll go over who we are, what we do, and how you can get help from the writing center.

Intro to project

  • We'll suppose you are working for an advertising agency that is creating a TV spot for the university.  By the end of this workshop, you will have a complete draft of your spot.

MAPS

  • Now we'll ask you to think about the contexts this video will be created and viewed in.
  • We'll ask you how you can exploit resources to achieve a particular rhetorical purpose with a particular audience.

Demo clip

  • Now we'll show a demo video clip, asking you to think about
    • What kinds of media elements you see (music, voice-overs, still images, video, titles, transitions, etc)
    • How these elements have been used to achieve a particular rhetorical purpose with a particular audience

Small-group planning/analysis

  • Workshop presenters and groups will now get together to discuss the assigned rhetorical situation and possible rhetorical strategies for different audiences
    • Prospective students
