Communicating Effectively with Poster Displays workshop

The Communicating Effectively with Poster Displays workshop focuses on the principles of design that go into creating an effective poster display, including contrast, alignment, layout, typography, repetition, proximity, and the use of visual elements like photographs and diagrams.

Brief introduction to the Writing Center

  • First, we'll give you a basic idea of who we are at the writing center and what we do.

MAPS

  • Now, we'll ask you to think about in which rhetorical situation your poster will be displayed.
    • What is a poster display as a genre and as a physical object?
    • Where are they used?
    • Who is your audience and under what circumstances will they be "reading" your poster?
    • How much time will the spend on your poster?
    • What is the purpose?
      • To summarize information?
      • To analyze or synthesize the news?
      • To present an argument?

Principles of Design

  • Now, we'll ask you to think about how the context and design of your display interact, as well as how you can most effectively design it.
  • C.R.A.P.
    • Context
    • Repetition
    • Alignment
    • Proximity

Work Time

  • At this point, if you have a topic already chosen, you can begin to work on a mock up of a poster design.
  • If you don't have a topic, we'll provide one, and facilitators will be available to guide/help you.

Presentation of Mockups

  • Finally, whoever wants to share their presentation can, and we'll have final discussions on what we see.
