EWCWA presentation

Our session started out with a typical creative writing workshop on a poem. Then we discussed why incorporating creative writing and creative writers into the writing center is important, because it expands our community and encourages ESL and less-experienced writers. We talked about what approaches to take when engaging in a creative writing consultation and emphasized the fact that creative writing is not too personal to critique. Next we discussed some different techniques and conventions that the genres of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry use and some tips for looking for them in a session. Then we talked about the differences and similarities between workshopping and one-on-one consultations and academic versus creative writing. We ended our session talking about the importance of training consultants in how to work with creative writing and discussed our research we have been conducting about transferring the benefits of group, collaborative workshopping to traditional writing center one-on-one consultations. Look out for some handouts for training consultants in how to work with creative writing!
