At the 2017 MiWCA conference, Cristian Lambaren and Kiera Williams presented on the affect and effect of the Writing Center space on multilingual learners seeking assistance from writing center tutors at the MSU Bessey writing center and its 5 subsequent satellite hubs. This panel showed that while clients like the welcoming feel of the Bessey writing center, it seems busy, having a lot of miscellaneous objects around that are not or do not seem conducive to writing or giving one impetus to write. However, clients were similarly critical of the satellites décor, noting they were bare, lacking, and without any accoutrements to help relax writers. While this difference is stark, and in large part due to how the neighborhood satellites are contracted out to the writing center, it is clear that multilingual clients conclude that each writing center space, no matter which one they attend, lacks balance. As such, the MSU writing center should begin to think of ways to balance the look and feel of the writing center across both its main hub and its subsequent satellite locations.

My first semester at The Writing Center, I did not have the opportunity to work in Bessey, the main center. I was only a consultant in the BCC and the Library. This semester, however, I am working a majority of my hours in Bessey and am noticing a big difference in the type of work I do and the clients that come.
For starters, while working in Bessey I have been significantly more involved in The Writing Center activities. I have now conducted 3 workshops and have been scheduled for Online Consulting, which I never did last semester. Furthermore, working in Bessey, I am in constant contact with my fellow consultants. In the satellite locations, I really only saw the consultants that worked within those satellites, and this isn’t to say that I did not enjoy working in those places, but that I did not have the opportunity to get to know a lot of other consultants. Welcome back to a new semester! At The Writing Center we have been preparing for this with a staff orientation. As a returning consultant, staff orientation this semester was much different from last. Back in August, I was just beginning, I barely knew anyone and was unsure of what to expect. But now with a semester of consulting under my belt, orientation was a lot more fun and easy going. Continue reading →
Everyone is getting ready for finals week and so are we. We have submitted our available times and received a new finals week schedule. The website content committee is preparing several pieces of writing in advance to be posted during finals. The Writing Center is getting ready for the end of the semester madness, are you?
If you see a regular consultant at a regular time, be prepared to search for them in a new location. And not all of our satellite locations are open. McDonel and Hubbard will be open Sunday from 5-9 and Brody, Holden, and the Union will be open Monday from 5-9. But Bessey and the Library will be open during their regular hours. Make your appointments early so you can get the times you want. The end of another semester is near and we are here to help you before we all head home for good food and lots of rest.
Hiya, folks. Another week come and gone in this semester, and with only about a month left before break, seeing the first snow of the season was only natural. With that in mind, this week’s trend has definitely been awesome knit hats. Students are bundling up to combat the cold, and we’ve been seeing a lot of interesting caps here at The Writing Center. From neon hunting hats, to handmade knit headbands, to knitted caps with whale patterns, students are well prepared for winter. And, if you’re looking to be fully prepared for finals, stop on by one of our many locations to consult about that paper or project you’re creating.
Hey folks, this week’s hottest trend has a bit of flair to it: classy wear. That’s right, we’re talking dresses and ties! It’s the season of career fairs and job interviews, and those events not only require a professional look, but some well-written résumés, too. The Writing Center consultants have been seeing a lot of résumés, applications, and personal statements lately, and are more than happy to read through YOUR work. You can make an appointment for 30 minutes or an hour, and we have quite a few different locations you can check out!
Hey there! It looks like THE hottest top to wear this past week was a flannel shirt. With the cold weather suddenly upon us, students everywhere have been bundling up as they travel across campus. With a chill in the air, it can be hard to want to leave your comfy, cozy room to make it to your Writing Center appointment. Have no fear! We’ve opened up many new locations this year, with hours during the day or evening for your convenience. Check out the list, and see which is closest to you; we might even have a location in your dorm hall, so all you have to do is head on downstairs to go over that paper due later this week, or that application you’ve been working on.
What are you waiting for? Your next Writing Center appointment may be just around the corner.
The Writing Center would like to invite you to check out our two new satellite locations at The MSU Union and McDonel Hall.
These new satellite locations have been opened to offer new and diverse locations to get the same great help as all of our other Writing Center locations. Whether you live just behind Albert Road or are a graduate student in Owen, these two locations have been open with our clients in mind.
The MSU Union location is a great place to come if you live in West Circle, or after you stop into the “original” Biggby and grab a cup of coffee. The MSU Union location is open 5pm-10pm on Sundays and 6:30pm-10pm Monday through Wednesday.
Our new satellite location in McDonel Hall is located in room 105c and has extremely easy access to the Sparty’s in the next room over. This location provides easy access to The Writing Center services whether you live in Owen, Holmes, or McDonel itself. Graduate students, International Students, Lyman-Briggs students, and all kinds of students alike are welcome to check out this new location on Sunday from 5pm-10pm, Monday from 2pm-9pm, or Tuesday and Wednesday 6pm-9pm
