Consultants periodically get to go to writing Center conferences. We can go to one just for the experience and then we can go to more if we are presenting. I recently went to the Eastern Central Writing Center Association (ECWCA) conference and presented with the rest of the Website team (the Koalas) in good old Clarion, Pennsylvania.
After a lovely five and a half hour drive, we arrived in a beautiful rainy Pennsylvania and then had some delicious pizza… well some people had salad with fries on top. The presentations started bright and early Friday morning with poster presentations. The koalas presented at two and we were pretty awesome if I may say so myself. As a panel we discussed the website itself, the content, and social media. I specifically talked about the Consultant Diaries and why I chose to write them and how I go about doing so. Overall, it was a good experience that again showed me a different aspect of consulting at our Writing Center.
Another week come and gone here at The Writing Center. October has suddenly appeared, making this past week’s trendiest accessory a hot cup of coffee. The middle of the semester is almost upon us, which means one thing: midterms. Students are spending their time studying away in the library, and pulling late-night cram sessions to fit in just a little more review before the exam. Caffeine becomes a necessity for surviving all of these exams and papers. Help take a little stress off yourself about your paper by bringing it into The Writing Center (where we also offer coffee, tea, and other hot beverages!). We would love to read over it with you and help make that paper as good as it can be.
Hope to see you here soon, and good luck with your studies!
The Writing Center celebrated yet another of its 20/20 events this past week: ReCyle, ReMix, ReClaim. The inspiration was found in this year’s One Book, One Community choice, a program co-sponsored by the City of East Lansing and MSU. The 2012 book is Katherine Boo’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers, a story that takes place in the slums of India.
In this novel, a series of families sort and sell trash as one way out of the slums. Similarly, The Writing Center’s event welcomed students of all backgrounds to come and repurpose items that had previously been thought to be trash—bottles, cardboard, containers, etc. It was an eye-opening exercise in shifting the perspective with which we view the world.
The final product.
Students ranging in age from Freshmen to Graduate Students came to participate, sharing a bit about themselves and their unique backgrounds as they worked together to turn the trash into something beautiful. As they worked to build a small “city,” discussions about campus, life, and learning were had throughout the evening. It was an activity that created a community based on differences, and that celebrated our diversity. This is what The Writing Center and MSU are all about: creating connections between people and things that open our eyes, and make our world a better place.
Hey there! It looks like THE hottest top to wear this past week was a flannel shirt. With the cold weather suddenly upon us, students everywhere have been bundling up as they travel across campus. With a chill in the air, it can be hard to want to leave your comfy, cozy room to make it to your Writing Center appointment. Have no fear! We’ve opened up many new locations this year, with hours during the day or evening for your convenience. Check out the list, and see which is closest to you; we might even have a location in your dorm hall, so all you have to do is head on downstairs to go over that paper due later this week, or that application you’ve been working on.
What are you waiting for? Your next Writing Center appointment may be just around the corner.
Looks like THE color to wear last week was turquoise–specifically, the awesome Writing Center 20/20 shirt. This fall semester marks the 20th anniversary of Writing Center, and we are celebrating with 20 different events. This festive year was kicked off with a big party in August, and some of the other upcoming events include game nights, creating a cook book, open mic nights, and more parties!
Next event on the calendar is the Reading with the Red Cedar Writing Project–will you be there?
