Hours and Locations

Because all language--including written language--is best learned in the contexts of use, the Writing Center works with students and faculty from departments, colleges, and programs across the curriculum in satellite writing centers. These centers exist in the midst of the various contexts in which students are learning the demands for reading and writing in various fields and disciplines.

Walk-in Consulting at the MSU Library

This Writing Center satellite, conveniently located between the Information Desk and the Cyber Cafe in the library, was established in 2000. Consulting sessions are available on a walk-in, first-come, first-served basis. APPOINTMENTS ARE NOT NECESSARY.

The Writing Center in the library is open from 3:00 p.m.- 10:00 p.m. Monday - Thursdays and 3:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. on Sundays during the fall and spring semesters.

Student Athlete Support Services (SASS) Writing Center

The Student Athlete Support Services Writing Center (SASS-WC) was established in the Clara Bell Smith Student-Athlete Academic Center in 1997. In the SASS-WC, student-athletes schedule appointments during study table hours to brainstorm topics, organize ideas, and polish rough drafts of their writing in one-on-one sessions with Undergraduate Writing Consultants (UWCs).

The James Madison College Writing Center

The James Madison Writing Consultancy (JMWC), established in 1993, is the oldest unit-level writing center satellite on the campus. Housed in Case Hall, the JMWC serves the particular needs of writers in James Madison College. Experienced peer consultants, upper-division Madison students familiar with the college's curriculum, consult with peers at all stages of the composing process (brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing) and all levels of proficiency. James Madison Writing Consultants also host a variety of workshops and classroom presentations, such as "Reading a Complicated Text," "Writing in the Field," and "Peer Response to Writing," to help Madison students gain a better understanding of reading and writing in the social sciences. The JMWC is administered independently of the MSU Writing Center.
