Trendspotting: Go Tigers!

By Alyson GinesHi folks, it has been pretty clear what this week’s trend is: Detroit Tigers! Consultants and students alike have been proudly representing our team as the excitement towards the World Series has been mounting. We love seeing people passionate about something, and sharing in their enthusiasm. Are you writing a short story you’re psyched about? Working on a paper about your favorite book? Writing a personal statement to get into your top grad school? Bring it into The Writing Center; we would love to collaborate with you. And Go Tigers!

Trendspotting: Classy Outfits

Hey folks, this week’s hottest trend has a bit of flair to it: classy wear. That’s right, we’re talking dresses and ties! It’s the season of career fairs and job interviews, and those events not only require a professional look, but some well-written résumés, too. The Writing Center consultants have been seeing a lot of résumés, applications, and personal statements lately, and are more than happy to read through YOUR work. You can make an appointment for 30 minutes or an hour, and we have quite a few different locations you can check out!

Trendspotting: Green and White!

Trendspotting with Alyson Gines logoHey there!  It’s been pretty clear what the trend of this week has been: Spartan gear! We are approaching homecoming weekend, and everyone on campus and in The Writing Center has been showing their support. Even alumni are getting in on the festivities, starting with  The Writing Center Alumni Panel this Friday, October 12th at 3pm in 300 Bessey Hall. Feel free to also check out The Writing Center Homecoming Celebration in the CAL tent on Saturday too! We’ll be there from 9-11:30 helping you create inspiring words with alphabet photography!

Go Green! Go White!

Trendspotting: A Cup of Coffee

Trendspotting with Alyson Gines logoAnother week come and gone here at The Writing Center. October has suddenly appeared, making this past week’s trendiest accessory a hot cup of coffee. The middle of the semester is almost upon us, which means one thing: midterms. Students are spending their time studying away in the library, and pulling late-night cram sessions to fit in just a little more review before the exam. Caffeine becomes a necessity for surviving all of these exams and papers. Help take a little stress off yourself about your paper by bringing it into The Writing Center (where we also offer coffee, tea, and other hot beverages!). We would love to read over it with you and help make that paper as good as it can be.

Hope to see you here soon, and good luck with your studies!

Event Recap: ReCycle, ReMix, ReClaim

Colorful tape made to be rivers and roads stretched across a flat cardboard box.

The beginning.

The Writing Center celebrated yet another of its 20/20 events this past week: ReCyle, ReMix, ReClaim. The inspiration was found in this year’s One Book, One Community choice, a program co-sponsored by the City of East Lansing and MSU. The 2012 book is Katherine Boo’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers, a story that takes place in the slums of India.

In this novel, a series of families sort and sell trash as one way out of the slums. Similarly, The Writing Center’s event welcomed students of all backgrounds to come and repurpose items that had previously been thought to be trash—bottles, cardboard, containers, etc. It was an eye-opening exercise in shifting the perspective with which we view the world.

The final product - bottles covered in tape and ribbon making towers, playground equipment made from pipe cleaner.

The final product.

Students ranging in age from Freshmen to Graduate Students came to participate, sharing a bit about themselves and their unique backgrounds as they worked together to turn the trash into something beautiful. As they worked to build a small “city,” discussions about campus, life, and learning were had throughout the evening. It was an activity that created a community based on differences, and that celebrated our diversity. This is what The Writing Center and MSU are all about: creating connections between people and things that open our eyes, and make our world a better place.

Trendspotting: Flannel

Trendspotting with Alyson Gines logoHey there! It looks like THE hottest top to wear this past week was a flannel shirt. With the cold weather suddenly upon us, students everywhere have been bundling up as they travel across campus. With a chill in the air, it can be hard to want to leave your comfy, cozy room to make it to your Writing Center appointment. Have no fear! We’ve opened up many new locations this year, with hours during the day or evening for your convenience. Check out the list, and see which is closest to you; we might even have a location in your dorm hall, so all you have to do is head on downstairs to go over that paper due later this week, or that application you’ve been working on.

What are you waiting for? Your next Writing Center appointment may be just around the corner.

Trendspotting: Résumés

Trendspotting with Alyson Gines logoAny guesses as to what THE must-have accessory was last week? Résumés, résumés, résumés! Many of the appointments students made at The Writing Center were to review and improve their résumé writing skills. With autumn upon us, job interviews, internship fairs, and graduate school applications are a few of the great reasons to make an appointment.

Will you be ahead of the curve with an up-to-date, impressive résumé?

Trendspotting: The Color Turquoise

Looks like THE color to wear last week was turquoise–specifically, the awesome Writing Center 20/20 shirt. This fall semester marks the 20th anniversary of Writing Center, and we are celebrating with 20 different events. This festive year was kicked off with a big party in August, and some of the other upcoming events include game nights, creating a cook book, open mic nights, and more parties!

Next event on the calendar is the Reading with the Red Cedar Writing Project–will you be there?
