In our Writing Center class yesterday, Scott asked us about the importance of the Writing Center supporting multiliteracies. We talked about how the Writing Center should reflect society and the different modes of communication that are commonly used. But there is another benefit of being able to conduct sessions that help students with all forms of writing (including digital writing, multimedia writing, and visual rhetoric): the more literacies one has, the more effective of a communicator one becomes. Being fluent in multiple modes of writing allows one to chose the mode that is most appropriate and effective for a particular situation. If we, as writing consultants, can increase the number of literacies that MSU students have, we will be able to help prepare them not only to succeed in the classroom, but also in their communities and their workplaces. No matter what industry MSU students end up in, they will need to be able to communicate their ideas--having the freedom to modify a message for an audience by not only changing the wording but by utilizing a different mode of communication is such a wonderful skill to have. Plus, as consultants we are challenged to expand our literacies in order to be able to help more students, making us better communicators in the process.
