As will seem repetitive for anyone who reads all of these blog posts, the director of the Center, Trixie, talked to the consultant-in-training class today. She answered all of our questions, press-conference style, and gave us some insider knowledge about the MSU Writing Center and how it compares to other WCs across the nation. Two of the things she said made me proud to be a part of the Center.
- The MSU Writing Center is a leader in working with multimedia and digital forms of writing. Being innovative and forward-thinking is super important to me, and it's obvious that the WC is both.
- Being transparent with pedagogy and methods is a big part of the work that is done at the WC. For example, consultants should explain to first-time clients why we do things the way we do. I wish all of my professors followed this same model (some of them do, especially those within my degree program...which is partly why I chose it). But really, wouldn't the world be so much easier to navigate if more things were done this way?
On a side note, a fun fact that I learned today is that, when the WC opened up a waiting list, it was consistently around 30 people long. I wonder how many students would be served each day if there were unlimited consultants--something I will never know because funds will never be unlimited.
