Sometimes students are required to attend the Writing Center; this may be individual students who are struggling or whole classes--usually b/c the professor knows the value of the WC and wants to introduce his/her students to the wonderful things that happen in the center and the prof knows that some students just won't attend on their own.
Often these required visits also require proof. When a student needs proof of attendance, you should help him/her to print out a list of appointments from the My Account section of WCOnline; we can then stamp the paper with the WC stamp as further, personal proof. In Bessey, the stamp is located at the front desk. We also have WC stamps at all satellite locations so this shouldn't be an issue.
Yes, we prefer students who come on their own because they are typically more eager to work with us and more open to collaboration, but many of our regular clients, and even a few consultants over the years, first came to the WC because a prof required a visit. Heck, we require visits in the WC Theory and Practice course : )
So don't be down on the students who are here b/c someone made them visit. This is your chance to show the students what a wonderful resource the WC is and to get them coming back on their own. It will also help validate the writing instruction the students are getting from their prof--after all the prof knew enough to get them to the WC, right? It should be a win for the student, the prof, and the WC, so please treat it as a great opportunity.
