For Faculty/Staff

Update: Writing Center Services for Faculty (effective March 16, 2020)

The Writing Center @ MSU is committed to helping writers wherever they are in the writing process from brainstorming, to drafting, to revising, to editing. It is our plan to continue this work remotely; we will meet students online to offer similar services to those we offer face-to-face, allowing students to work with us from wherever they find themselves geographically.

Online Schedule

Beginning March 16 through the end of the term, we will have a new single schedule that is for all online appointments. You can reach this schedule through our homepage at writing.msu.edu.

We will be available for online appointments during the following hours:

  • Sunday 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

  • Monday – Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

  • Friday 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

We conduct our online appointments in google docs. Users will receive an email “Invitation to Edit” before their scheduled appointment; if they have not received this email by 5 minutes after, they should call the center to follow-up, 517-432-3610. Users will be sent a link to a google doc where they will meet with their consultant. Through chat, suggesting mode, and comments in the shared document, they will conduct the session. Students will still receive Client Letters/Notes after the session that can be shared with professors who request it.

Online Chat

We have also instituted an online chat feature that can be accessed through our homepage. This chat feature is intended to answer quick questions, help students make appointments, or troubleshoot any tech issues with their online appointments.  If questions become too lengthy, students will be asked to make an appointment. If users provide an email when initiating a chat session, they can be sent a transcript of the session.

Workshops

We have cancelled all workshops at this time.  If that changes, we’ll send out a notice and make an announcement on our website. We would, however, be happy to provide faculty with the general PowerPoint slide decks used for any of our workshops in the regular menu.  If you would like to have any of these, please send an email request to writing@msu.edu.

New Ideas

We do ask that you not use the writing center as a general class activity, i.e., since we can’t have face-to-face peer review, I’ll send you all of the WC.  We are open to working with you, however, if you want to set up some designated open/drop-in times for your students with a consultant or two who has been briefed on your particular assignment and expectations. We’re also open to other pre-planned ideas. Please reach out to Dr. Trixie G. Smith at smit1254@msu.edu, and we’ll see what’s possible.

Thank you for your adaptability during this time.
